For Uncle Steve: Just How Wide is this River?
|
The river looks narrow in the videos, but behold! For Uncle Steve*: Just How Wide is this River?* river looks narrow in the videos, but behold! It's actually wide. And quite shallow, I can stand almost everywhere (6"2').The cross-section of the bed is best imagined as a stretched right-angled triangle with the ground being the hypotenusis, and the water level being one of the catheti. There are places where it's different but I haven't shown them in the videos yet.In the portion of the river that you see in the videos, you cannot walk on the totally overgrown banks. You have to access the water at entry/exit points. If the water is low, you may walk on gravel banks, but usually even then you have to cross a number of pools. Trout are sometimes coming in to feed in the shallow portions (like in Trout Edge Nymphony), so you can hunt for them fishing from the gravel banks, or while wading in shallow water. If you want to cast into the deeper portions, or cast underneath overhanging vegetation, you must wade in and cast from the middle of the river or, better yet, from within the farthest 3rd, which in most cases is waist deep for me. The current is moderate, as you can see.I will give you an impression in one of my next videos in which I will compare the various water levels.
